Landscape is an image of the combined effects of soil formation factors, such as relief, organisms, origin material and climate along the time. It is very important to know the soil distribution in the landscape in order to perform soil (or pedological) assessments and also in soil genesis studies. In older and more stable surfaces in the landscape (plan or smooth relief), Oxisols occur in general, associated or not to Quartzipsamments.
On the other hand, on younger surfaces (wavy or mountain relief) one generally finds Ultisols, Alfisols, Inceptisols, Molisols and Udorthents. Vertisols occur in plain lowlands or in the lower third of nearly plain slopes in Northeastern and Southern Brazil. Along the coast line one mainly finds Spodosols, in coastline lowlands there occur cohesive Oxisols and Ultisols. In plain flooded lands, there occurs Histosols and/or Aquox, or Aqualf, or Aqult, whereas Inceptisols occur in terraces and Fluvents are found along water streams.
